Artificial Turf Facts
Not all artificial turf grass is the same. There are many companies who claim to offer you the best artificial turf in the world while hiding behind an e-mail address or phone number.
We at Majestic Turf are proud to offer the most detailed, factual artificial turf information available on the web. We will educate you on the types of artificial turf available while stating the pro's and cons of each.
If you're like most you want the truth. Here are the facts.
The single biggest factor in measuring artificial turf quality is "density". In other words, how many fibers does the turf have (measured in oz. per sq./yd.)?
It's simple. If you have dense turf, the product will tollerate wear and tear (abrasion) better and last longer! All of our products at Majestic Turf far exceed the industry standards in fiber density.
Secondly, most artificial turf grass products on the market look just that... artificial!
Majestic Turf, LLC is located in the GRASS SEED CAPITOL OF THE WORLD (Linn County, Oregon). We know what top quality grass should look like.
Our products are mirrored after some of the finest natural grasses ever developed.
There are 3 types of artificial turf available to the consumer:
- Polypropylene
- Polyethylene
- Nylon
Polypropylene - Is the most widely used synthetic grass on the market. Why, mainly because it's the least expensive.
Golf Uses: Many companies use polypropylene as a putting surface (Again, mostly because it is an inexpensive material). Polypropylene cannot tolerate high heat and melts around 155 deg. F. so it shows signs of wearing easily.
The low melting point only allows polypropylene to be manufactured in a one direction blade design. What does this mean? Basically, this means when you putt on a polypropylene green you can expect a true roll in one direction only. If you putt against or across the grain your ball will skip across the turf. This is the biggest complaint with customers concerning polypropylene putting greens.
Installers try to compensate the untrue ball roll by infilling the turf to the top of the fibers with silica sand. It does help, but why would you want to putt on sand when you just spent your hard earned money on synthetic grass?
In all fairness, polypropylene artificial turf does have some advantages. It is very stain resistant (Especially to acids) and does not obsorb water. A polypropylene putting green will accept a chip shot better at greater distances than most other synthetic grasses.
Polyethylene- The unique trait with polyethylene is its "soft" texture.
Polyethylene turf is dominating the soccer and football fields of today! It can be made up to 3" in pile height to mimic various natural grasses.
Lawn/landscape uses: Because of its soft fibers, polyethylene is the #1 choice for artificial grass lawns and play areas. Polyethylene is usually infilled with a combination of sand and or crumb rubber (made from recycled tires). The purpose of the infill is to help the fibers stand upright, hold down the turf & provide a softer surface.
Golf Uses: Not typically used for a putting surface but does make for an excellent fringe grass surrounding a green.
Nylon - Arguably the strongest artificial turf on the market. Nylon can tolerate heat and friction better than any other turf (Manufactured at 250 deg. F).
The high manufacturing temp. sets a memory into the nylon fibers which helps to minimize the "matting" effect that you get with other synthetic turf. You can park a car on a nylon surface and when removed, the fibers will spring back to there original position.
Golf Uses: Nylon makes for an excellent artificial putting green. The fibers/blades can be made with a multi-directional interlocking design. Simply put, you can putt in any direction on a Nylon Putting Green and always have a true ball roll.
Why a nylon putting green is better:
- Resists abrasion and scarring up to 250 deg. F (Poly. melts at 155 deg. F)
- Truest ball roll in ANY direction (Poly. is one direction only)
- Minimal sand needed. (Poly. has to be infilled to the top of the fibers)
- Long lasting!
Lawn/Landscape Uses: Nylon is typically not used for lawn/landscape applications because of its cost.
Types of Artificial Turf we use & sell
Majestic Turf utilizes both Polyethylene & Nylon artificial turf.
We use a polyethylene/nylon mix for our lawn/landscape applications. Again, polyethylene is soft to the touch and makes for an excellent artificial grass lawn.
Because of its unique characteristics , Majestic Turf uses 100% Nylon for a putting surface. We feel our customers deserve the highest quality material available and nylon is superior in perfomance, appearance and longevity.
